It is a classic scene that is the subject of this gouache. In France, certainly in the so-called free zone, after November 1942, Jews were arrested. The date and location are inferred from the fact that people do not wear the yellow star, imposed in the occupied zone. An old man, a woman, and her child are surrounded by a German soldier and a member of the Gestapo. The latter is defined by his clothing, although traditionally the Gestapo men wore a black leather coat. The old man is a veteran, disabled from the war of 1914-1918, as reflected in the amputated arm and the array of medals, including the Legion of Honor. This is an important detail, because many Jewish veterans though that title would protect them from arrest. The presence of the wife and daughter recall that the arrests affect the entire Jewish population as evidenced equally by women and men who are handcuffed in the truck.
