Le mémorial Jean Moulin est l’oeuvre du sculpteur Marcel Courbier qui effectue là son troisième monument dédié à Jean Moulin (Chartres, Béziers et Salon). Il est tout à fait original et ne ressemble à aucun autre. Il s’agit de commémorer le parachutage de Jean Moulin en Provence, dans la nuit du 1er au 2 janvier 1942, en compagnie de Raymond Fassin et d’Hervé Montjaret. 

L’oeuvre est vraiment d’une grande pureté, d’un style très épuré : un bronze noir immense, les bras tendus vers le ciel, les poings serrés sur d’imaginaires sangles, les jambes fines et jointes, la tête légèrement inclinée vers le sol, tout contribue à magnifier l’homme, le clandestin tombé du ciel, juste quelques instants avant qu’il ne touche le sol de Provence.
Une inscription : « Hommage des soldats de l’ombre à l’unificateur de la résistance, érigé par souscription publique auprès des associations d’anciens combattants, de résistants, de déportés, avec le concours des autorités officielles et parmi les élèves des écoles de Provence. Ce mémorial a été officiellement inauguré par Monsieur Chaban-Delmas, Premier Ministre, le 28 septembre 1969 en présence de Monsieur Henri Duvillard, ministre des Anciens Combattants et victimes de guerre, qui en avait posé la première pierre le 21 avril 1968 ».

 

The Jean Moulin Memorial was commissioned by sculptor Marcel Courbier, this one being the third made by him in remembrance of Jean Moulin (the other two are in Chartres and Béziers), in a unique and original work. This particular memorial commemorates the airdrop of Jean Moulin in Provence, along with Raymond Fassin and Hervé Montjaret during the night of January 1^st 1942.

The sculpture itself is quite refined stylistically, cast in a large piece of bronze, the arms reaching out toward the sky, clenched fists around the imaginary webbing, the legs thin and jointed, the head slightly bending towards the ground, all contributing to magnify the man, the clandestine falling from the sky, only moments before he lands on the ground in Provence. 

Inscribed is the quote “Homage to the soldiers of the shadows to the Man who unified  the Resistance, erected upon behalf of the public and the associations of former Résistance fighters, deportees and soldiers of the Resistance with the permission of official authorities and including the students of Provence. This memorial was officially inaugurated by Monsieur Chaban-Dalmas, Prime Minister, on September 28^th 1969 in the presence of Monsieur Henri Duvillard, minister of the War Veterans (Anciens Combattants et victimes de guerre), who had laid the first stone for this monument on April 21 1968".
