Armed Activity

It was after occupation that armed activity on the part of the Resistance movement began to occur in the region. This activity took many forms, from sabotage to the creation of the Maquis, and included attacks on occupying troops, bombings, executions, and even street fighting. These militant efforts were complicated by a period of harsh repression and a shortage of arms and material. The Maquis, after becoming an organized and formal dimension of the Resistance movement in 1943, played an important role in the Liberation.

These numerous sabotages often targeted industrial plants and means of transportation in an effort to slow down or prevent the transfer of men and material to Germany and Italy. Many well-known figures, both amongst the collaborationists and the occupying forces, were executed. Bombs were both thrown and deposited in areas frequented by the occupying forces, their barracks, and the headquarters of certain organizations. Overall, the armed activity by the Resistance maintained an atmosphere of insecurity amongst the occupying forces and the collaborationists.
